When the US tested a nuclear weapon on Bikini atoll in the South Pacific it caused the death and destruction of hundreds of lives of native people it dismissed as “nuclear savages.”

Legendary health researchers DR. Janette Sherman and Joe Mangano then tell us about the terrifying death toll from the Chernobyl accident, which happened, 30 years ago.
In 2009 three Russian scientists published studies indicating a million people have been killed by this fallout from this 1986 catastrophe. Working through the Radiation and Health Project,
Mangano and Sherman now estimate a similar death toll resulting from the disaster at Fukushima.
They also show that when a nuclear power plant opens, death rates in the area rise; when they shut, death rates go down, especially among children. In the four counties around Indian
Point, near New York City, the thyroid cancer rate is 70% higher than normal, a plague we’re now seeing around Fukushima.

Peter and Mickey open the program with a wide-ranging conversation with long-time social justice activist Medea Benjamin; the discussion covers topics from trade deals to drone warfare, as well as her latest project of trying to alert Americans about the human rights abuses committed by US ally Saudi Arabia. In the second half of the show, Peter and Mickey speak with nuclear-power whistle blower Arnie Gunderson, who recently returned from a visit to Fukushima, Japan; he warns that radioactive contamination is now pervasive in the Fukushima area, but the Japanese government is trying to avoid addressing the health issues.
The first interview is with Linda Pentz Gunter, international specialist for the environmental advocacy group ‘Beyond Nuclear.’ In this conversation, Gunter addresses the question of whether nuclear is being seriously explored as an alternative to the climate-ravaging fossil fuel industry. She also outlines aspects of the Fukushima cover-up, and why international bodies and media are failing to hold nuclear and government agencies to account.
In the final half hour, Portland-based Mimi German, Earth activist and founder of Radcast.org, speaks more about the cover-up, the nuclear situation in the U.S. and the consequences for society and all life on earth.
Nuclear-industry critics Arnie and Maggie Gunderson warn that, almost five years after the meltdown, Fukushima still poses a danger to Japan and the Pacific region, and that the Japanese government is trying to prevent journalists and physicians from disclosing the ongoing problems.
The program closes with an excerpt from a 2015 speech by Arnie Gunderson rebutting the idea of nuclear power as a solution to global warming.
Arnie and Maggie Gunderson both worked in the nuclear industry, then became whistleblowers about problems in the industry.
They now operate the Fairewinds Foundation (www.fairewinds.org).
