Time for coastal residents to start retreating from the ocean — The Threats of sea level rise

Prof. Orrin Pilkey is Professor Emeritus of Earth Sciences at Duke University and the Founding Director Emeritus of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines at the university’s Nicholas School of the Environment, where he has been teaching since 1965. Prof Pilkey is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in coastal geology, barrier islands, ocean levels, and beach loss and replenishment.  He has received numerous awards including the Francis Shepard Medal for Excellence in Marine Geology and the Priestly Award.  Prof. Pilkey has published over 250 technical publications and a dozen books. His most recent include “Retreat from a Rising Sea: Hard Choices in an Age of Climate Change,” “Lessons from the Sand,” and “The Last Beach.” Former Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt, called Orrin’s earlier book “The Rising Sea” “a must read for all Americans.”  And his articles can be read at CoastalCare.org
