The failures and health risks of the biopsychiatric view of mental disorders
Dr. Al Galves is a psychologist practicing in Las Cruces, New Mexico. For the past 15 years, he has been active in the movement to defeat biological psychiatry — the psychiatric school that understands mental disorders solely in terms of the biological function of the nervous system and the strongest advocates of psycho-pharmaceutical drugs. Al has served on the Boards of Directors of the Mind Freedom International since 2004, and International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry since 2006, and was the Society’s Executive Director between 2011 to 2013. In addition to receiving his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Union Institute, he also holds a degree in government from Cornell and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania. And a public announcement to accompany our conversation: There will be a protest against the American Psychiatric Association this Sunday, May 6 outside the Javits Center in Manhattan. That is at 11th Avenue between 36th and 37th streets. Demonstrators should arrive before 1 pm.
