He is the James A Gray Distinguished Professor of Biblical and Christian studies at the Universty of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he specializes in the texts of the New Testament, non-canonical literature, Gnosticis and the historical origins of Christianity. He received his doctorate from Princeton University and has received numerous awards for academic excellence. Prof Ehrman is the author and editor of over 30 books, 5 having appeared on the New York Times bestseller list.
