Progressive Commentary Hour – 03.29.16

Dr. Brian Hooker is an Associate Professor of Biology at Simpson University in California, and a senior consultant for ARES Corporation, specializing in environmental restoration design. He is a prominent leader in the organization Focus Autism, which is investigating the scientific evidence for a vaccine-autism connection. Brian has a 16 year old son with autism and has been active in autism community for a decade. In the middle of Dr. Hooker’s interview, Gary played Florida Congressman Bill Posey speaking on the House floor about a CDC whistle blower exposing deception at the CDC. This happened in July 2015. After the 5 minute clip, Dr.Hooker and Dr. Null spoke about Congressman Posey’s speech.

After the Dr. Hooker interview, Gary let everyone listen to Brian Deers, a journalist, who while walking into the General Medical Council hearings was confronted by parents with children who had Inflammatory Bowel Disease and told them they were wrong and basically crazy. Watch the whole film in the link from You Tube or just listen to the audio that we provided of the parents and Brian talk outside the General Medical Council hearings.

Shawn Aiken – New Jersey Divests from Payday Lending

When Phyllis Salowe-Kaye learned that the New Jersey State Investment Council (NJSIC) had invested 50 million state pension dollars with a private equity firm that used some of the funds to purchase a predatory payday lender, she went through the proverbial roof. The longtime executive director of New Jersey Citizen Action (NJCA) quickly assembled a powerful coalition of consumer protection …

BARRY LANDO – Perilous Unknowns: the Mental Health of Presidential Candidates

It’s become normal for Americans to demand—and receive-a professional assessment of the physical health of the candidates for president—just as they expect updates on the medical state of the president himself. After all, there have been many infamous cases of presidents, from Franklin Roosevelt to Jack Kennedy, who secretly endured serious debilitating illnesses. Thus, the current crop of presidential hopefuls …

Kelly Brogan, MD – Have You Been Told It’s All In Your Head? The New Biology Of Mental Illness

Psychiatry is notorious for saying “oops!” for a long history of abusing patients with pseudoscience-driven treatments and its shameful lack of diagnostic rigor. From the1949 Nobel Prize for therapeutic lobotomy to theRosenhan experiments in the 70s which exposed the invalidity of a psychiatrist’s clinical judgment (hospitalizing and treating actors feigning psychosis), the field is in crisis. The New Biology of Mental Illness My …

Leid Stories – Election 2016: Super Tuesday Fallout: WWBD? – 03.16.16

No surprise, really, in how things turned out yesterday–Donald Trump triumphed in three of five states, Florida, Illinois and North Carolina; Marco Rubio lost his own state and ended his campaign; Ted Cruz remained win less but is hoping to capture Rubio’s supporters in a long shot bid to remain in the race; and John Kasich scored his first victory, his home state of Ohio.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton bested her lone opponent, Bernie Sanders, in four states—Florida, Illinois, Ohio and North Carolina—with the final vote in Missouri too close to call.

As Leid Stories said yesterday, Super Tuesday “more than likely will cause a whittling of the GOP’s four-man slate, and on the Democratic side, a locked lead on being the nominee.” With Clinton appearing to have that locked lead on the Democratic nomination, the question becomes: “What Will Bernie Do?”

Leid Stories – Election 2016: Super Tuesday to Further Narrow Both Field and Focus – 03.15.16

It’s Super Tuesday (the third for this election cycle), and Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are in make-or-break primaries in delegate-rich Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri and North Carolina. Results by the end of the day more than likely will cause a whittling of the GOP’s four-man slate, and on the Democratic side, a locked lead on being the nominee. Leid Stories continues yesterday’s discussion on what this all means to and for the rest of us.

Gaius Publius – Do Foreign Lives Matter? Hillary Clinton, a Death in Honduras & Feminism

I’ve been looking for a way to tell this story, the story of Hillary Clinton and the murder of Berta Cáceres, for a while. The core of the story involves yet another victim of Honduran right-wing violence. For example, there’s this, from The Nation: The Clinton-Backed Honduran Regime Is Picking Off Indigenous Leaders The names of Berta Cáceres’s murderers are yet unknown. …

Why pharmaceutical firms may prefer to invest in drugs over vaccines

HANOVER, N.H. – March 2, 2016 – When it comes to addressing disease, many industry observers and public health advocates believe that pharmaceutical companies prefer to invest in drugs rather than vaccines, as preventives are perceived to be inherently less profitable. A Harvard-Dartmouth study on preventives versus treatments published in theQuarterly Journal of Economics and recently summarized in “VOX EU”, offers a …

Interview with Gene Baur, President of Farm Sanctuary – 03.03.16

Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s, he has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production.

A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting the deplorable conditions that exist. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals.

Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal legislative bodies, advocating for better conditions for farm animals. His most important achievements include winning the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard and introducing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming confinement methods in Florida, Arizona, and California. His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. Gene has published two bestsellers, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (Scribner, 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life (Rodale, 2015), which he co-authored with Forks Over Knives author Gene Stone. Through his writing and his international speaking engagements, Gene provides simple actionable solutions coupled with a compassion-first approach to help us be the change we wish to see in treatment toward animals and in our food system.

Gene began his activist career selling veggie hotdogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues. Today, he serves as president of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, with shelters in New York and California. Providing rescue, refuge, and adoption for hundreds of farm animals each year, Farm Sanctuary shelters enable visitors to connect with farm animals as emotional, intelligent individuals. Gene believes these animals stand as ambassadors for the billions of factory farm animals who have no voice, and he has dedicated his career to advocating on their behalf.

Gene holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge, and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University. In 2015, Gene was granted an Associate appointment in Health, Behavior, and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In this prestigious position, Gene is focused on implementing courses related to evidence-based work on diet and farming as it aligns to Farm Sanctuary’s goals of shedding light on factory farming’s threat to public health, the environment and animal welfare.
