The Dr. Peter Breggin Hour – 01.25.17

Deborah Haas MS Ed has decades of experience in the addiction field and works for the Pennsylvania board that sets standards for addiction counselors. Deborah’s personal experience with addiction goes back to age 12 and she provides important insights into the complexities of trying to understand why people become addicted. She describes the harm done in treating people as if they are “broken” or suffering from “biochemical imbalances,” and the inherent contradiction in taking people off one set of drugs only to push them to take another set produced by the Pharmaceutical Empire. She fights the erosion of good therapy by the legal drug dealers. Deborah loved the four-part series of interviews that I did with Danish researcher Peter Gøtzsche, so this a reminder to search for those on www.breggin.com. Meanwhile, you will enjoy getting to know Deborah Haas, who is a shining light in the field of addiction treatment.

Jesse Ventura – The DEA: Judge and Jury on Marijuana

Last week, the DEA decided not to reschedule the classification of marijuana as a legal drug. According to federal drug codes, cannabis is still as deadly and addictive as heroin, with no known medical value. I was surprised to see how many articles were written about this decision without mentioning the obvious: This was going to happen. The DEA was …

What Women Must Know – The Healing Power of Curcumin with Dr. Ajay Goel, PhD – 02.18.16

Ajay Goel PhD is the Director of Epigenetics, Cancer Prevention, and Cancer Genomics at Baylor University Medical Center in Texas.

Dr. Goel has spent 20 years researching cancer and has been the lead author or contributor to over 100 scientific articles published in peer reviewed international journals and several book chapters. He is currently researching the prevention of gastrointestinal cancers using integrative and alternative approaches, including botanical products. Two of the primary botanicals he is investigating are curcumin (from turmeric) and boswellia.

His published clinical trial on major depressive disorder (MDD) showed that a highly potent curcumin extract equaled the effects of the prescription drug fluoxetine (Prozac) without the adverse effects. And his studies on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis showed potent botanicals to be better for relieving pain and lowering joint line tenderness than the commonly prescribed prescription medications.

Another recent cancer study by Dr. Goel shows the benefits of combining chemotherapy with a special form of highly-absorbable curcumin to improve treatment. The curcumin not only sensitized the cancer cells to the effects of but also protected healthy cells. “Our research found that curcumin was able to ignite the body’s own tumor suppression activity to keep a cancerous tumor from growing and spreading,” said Dr. Goel. On a cellular level, the curcumin kills DNA MMR defective cells that promote cancer growth.

Goel’s research has applications for other diseases. At the cellular level, inflammation is the cause of virtually every disease state in the body. His research with depression and arthritis shows that targeting inflammation has huge benefits for people with these conditions.

Dr. Goel is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Gastroenterology Association and is on the international editorial boards of World Journal of Gastroenterology and World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology. He also performs peer-reviewing activities for almost 50 scientific journals, as well serves on various grant funding committees of the National Institutes of Health.

Kit O’Connell – The War on Drugs Has Cost Taxpayers Over 1 Trillion Dollars

Despite increasing recognition of its usefulness as a medicine and increasingly state-level legalization, someone in the U.S. is arrested for marijuana possession about once every minute. The “war on drugs” costs Americans a staggering amount of money every year that it persists. Despite the billions they receive, federal, state and local law enforcement have a proven inability to stem the …

Tina Vasquez – I’ve Experienced a New Level of Racism Since Donald Trump Went After Latinos

Donald Trump’s hate speech against Latinos seems to be emboldening white Americans’ racism. For many, it may be hard to wrap their minds around the fact that that a reality TV star and failed businessman [3] who characterized Mexican immigrants as the “most unwanted people,” calling them “criminals, drug dealers,” and “rapists”, was not only running for president, but is …
