Alternative Visions – Trump, Free Trade, and the Global Slowdown – 07.15.16

A centerpiece of Trump’s campaign, that is gaining support for him among white working class voters in key swing states like Pennsylvania and Ohio, is his attack on free trade treaties from NAFTA to TPP. Today’s show examines the conditions behind the current stagnation of global trade the past 18 months, growing wage stagnation and income inequality in the US, and increasing US voters’ associating of their loss of quality jobs and declining wages with free trade. Dr. Rasmus briefly reviews policies in China, Japan, Europe, and the slowing of world trade. How US economic elites—from the Business Roundtable and others— are becoming terrified of Trump’s successful manipulation of voter discontent with free trade. The elements of Trump’s position on trade are discussed, including ‘tearing up’ treaties, imposing tariffs on Mexico and China, charges of China as currency manipulator, tax policy incentives encouraging job offshoring, and US visa policies. Jack critiques Trump’s positions and concludes that Trump—like Obama before and Hillary now—is simply pandering to the discontent and will reverse his promises on trade if elected. Pandering to the trade issue, however, may just provide Trump enough votes to win key states’ electoral majorities.

Mumia “May Have Been Poisoned”

Six months after Mumia Abu Jamal nearly died from diabetic shock, the nation’s best known political prisoner’s underlying illness has yet to be diagnosed, said Dr. Johanna Fernandez, a professor of history at New York City’s Baruch College and member of Educators for Mumia. Abu Jamal’s maddeningly itching skin has turned a leathery black, and his output of commentaries and analysis for Prison Radio “has diminished significantly,” said Fernandez, who fears Mumia is suffering a “deeper, systemic problem” or “may have been poisoned.” Nevertheless, “Mumia is delighted and inspired by the movement against police violence that has emerged in the country,” and will continue to speak out “from the belly of the beast.” That’s why, she said, “over and over, the state has tried to silence and kill him.”

A Burning Faith: Black Churches, White Supremacy

Hillary Clinton’s Storied “Struggle to Fit In” with Obama

Federal investigators probing a fire that destroyed Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greeleyville, S.C., last night reportedly believe arson was not the cause. The church was burned 20 years ago by Klansmen, and Mount Zion AME’s razing, the seventh Black church in the South to be destroyed by fire in recent weeks, has revived a history of white-supremacist terrorism against African Americans.

Leid Stories discusses the history of white-supremacist attacks on Black churches.

The ongoing sanitization by the media of the political history of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton continues. A Reuters story today reports that the presumptive Democratic nominee “struggled to fit in with Obama’s White House” as secretary of state. The story, typical of major-media coverage of Clinton and her campaign, deliberately omits historical perspective on how she got the Cabinet position in the first place, which might have had something to do with her storied “struggle to fit in.” Leid Stories explains.
