Kirsten Brodde – Black Friday: Breathe, take a break – the planet can’t handle it anymore

Instead of chasing prey in the jungle like our ancestors did, we chase bargain clothing that seems like a good deal. Just look at the scenes that take place every year in American shopping malls on the fourth Friday of November, when people try to secure a favourable position in the queue outside shops in the early hours of the …

Hazel Sheffield – The science of sleep and why napping is good for you

The Arndale shopping centre in Manchester is an impractical place to take a nap. Shoppers hurry through its drafty, off-white interior. People stop on curvy benches to eat Greggs pasties. Workers rush back to their desks before the end of their lunch break. No one notices the low throbbing sound emanating from a big black tent right in the middle …

Paul A. Philips – Permaculture: The New Paradigm Of Self Sufficient Community Based Living

The fact of the matter is that over the years we have allowed ourselves to be more and more accepting of the urban way of life with an ever-increasing preoccupation and overdependence on technology. Overcrowded but isolated from one another living in unnatural concrete jungles, brainwashed into the superficial consumerist lifestyle, goaded by the societal demands of corporate and governmental …

Almost 900 pounds of food waste is generated there every day, and …

Infectious Myth – Adam Lankford on Guns – 09.01.15

In Episode 69 David interviews professor Adam Lankford who recently published research, at an American Sociological Society conference, showing that the strongest factor that he studied that correlates with the number of mass shootings in a country is the rate of civilian gun ownership. David and Adam talk about whether mass shootings are important, as they represent only a small fraction of total gun deaths, and what some of the characteristics of gun shooters are, compared to other murderers, and how they differ between the US and other countries.
Some of the surprising statistics is that mass shooters are almost all male, whereas a small but significant fraction of other gun murders are by women. Mass shooters in the US on average kill fewer people, perhaps because of faster and more effective police response. Mass shooters outside the US are more likely to target military facilities, whereas American mass shooters are more likely to target civilian areas, such as schools, shopping malls and movie theaters. Mass shooters do tend to be loners, and they often focus their feelings of despair on a specific group, but this targeting does not appear to be the main reason for their violence.

“FACEBOOK’S POWER IS TO SORT WHAT PEOPLE SEE AND TO SCREEN INFORMATION. THAT’S BASICALLY WHAT GOOGLE DOES, TOO”

“Terms of Service,” the first book from the young cultural critic Jacob Silverman, is less an argument than a tour. Its subject is the Internet—or, more accurately, what Silverman calls “the social web,” which could be loosely defined as either a) an Internet experienced tailored to YOU!, or b) a surveillance system that comes equipped with some nice photo-saving and message-sharing …
