Nature Bats Last – 04.11.17

Guy and Mike speak with blogger (Moving Forward), Rob Seimetz about his journey into the world of abrupt climate change and its consequence of NTHE. Paul Marcotte and Kevin Hester join us as well. Serena from Western Australia gives us a moving synopsis of the struggle millennials face during these most difficult times. Download this episode (right click and save)

BEVERLY JAMES – Nature already dramatically impacted by climate change, study reveals

Global climate change has already impacted every aspect of life on Earth, from genes to entire ecosystems, according to a new University of Florida study. The paper appears today in the journal Science. “We now have evidence that, with only a ~1 degree Celsius of warming globally, major impacts are already being felt in natural systems,” said study lead author …

Climate change ripples through life on Earth

Climate change is affecting most life on Earth, despite an average global temperature increase of just 1oC, say leading international scientists in a study published today in Science. The scientific team, including researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (Coral CoE), The University of Queensland and the Queensland Museum in Australia, identified key ecological processes necessary …

Study: A tenth of the world’s wilderness lost since the 1990s

Researchers reporting in the journal Current Biology show catastrophic declines in wilderness areas around the world over the last 20 years. They demonstrate alarming losses comprising a tenth of global wilderness since the 1990s – an area twice the size of Alaska and half the size of the Amazon. The Amazon and Central Africa have been hardest hit. The findings underscore an …

Lauren McCauley – Fall of the Wild: Study Documents ‘Catastrophic Decline’ in World’s Untouched Places

Wilderness, though remote by nature, is not immune to the ravages of humanity. In fact, according to a new study in the journal Current Biology, the world’s wild places are undergoing “catastrophic decline” and could be facing elimination within decades if monumental policy shifts are not implemented. “If we don’t act soon, there will only be tiny remnants of wilderness around the planet, …

First Mammal Goes Extinct Due to Human-Caused Climate Change

The Bramble Cay melomys—a rodent found only on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef—has been declared extinct, according to a new study from researchers at the Queensland’s Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and the University of Queensland. Alarmingly, this could be the first mammal species wiped out due to human-induced climate change. The researchers came to the conclusion after failing to find a single specimen …

Resistance Radio – Gordon Grigg – 03.06.16

Gordon Grigg enjoyed a career as an academic zoologist who managed to spend a lot of time working in the field. Apart from interests in crocodylians that go back to 1971, he studied thermoregulatory biology of free-ranging echidnas and platypus in Australias high country, and flew aerial surveys of kangaroo populations for nearly 30 years. His PhD came from a study of fish biology at the University of Oregon. He then had 20 years on the academic staff at the University of Sydney followed by 20 years at the University of Queensland where he is now an Emeritus Professor. (A well balanced career!) His primary research interests are in vertebrate zoology, particularly their physiology, ecology and evolution and he has authored or co-authored about 200 peer-reviewed publications, about one quarter of which are on crocodylians. Today we talk about crocodylians.

JUSTIN GILLIS – Seas Are Rising at Fastest Rate in Last 28 Centuries

The worsening of tidal flooding in American coastal communities is largely a consequence of greenhouse gases from human activity, and the problem will grow far worse in coming decades, scientists reported Monday. Those emissions, primarily from the burning of fossil fuels, are causing the ocean to rise at the fastest rate since at least the founding of ancient Rome, the …

Scientists Say Geo-Engineering the Sky Necessary to Save Coral Reefs By Derrick Broze

A group of scientists from universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia have released a new study calling for geoengineering of the climate in order to save the coral reefs from a process known as “bleaching.” The researchers, including authors from the Carnegie Institution for Science, the University of Exeter, the Met Office Hadley Centre and the …

I’m going to climate denial school: My first week inside the science of anti-science – LINDSAY ABRAMS

Tuesday, for me and some ten thousand classmates, was the first day of climate denial school. Or, should I say, anti-climate denial school. We’d all signed up for Denial101x, a new, six-week MOOC (that’s “massive open online course,” for all you education luddites) aimed at making sense of this whole phenomenon — and at giving us the tools to fight deniers, so …
