The Torch – 12.17.18

Alene Lee (1931–1991) was an African-American member of the Beat generation in New York City whose romantic relationship with Jack Kerouac was the central theme in his novel The Subterraneans. Kerouac used the pseudonym Mardou Fox for Lee. Her long relationship with writer and journalist Lucien Carr led Lee to pursue an anonymous life. Her daughter Christina Diamonte tells the story.

The story of a woman whose 1 year old baby was ripped from her arms by NYPD officers because she was sitting on the floor after a 4 hour wait for a child care voucher from the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA). We also speak with Andrea J. Ritchie author of “Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color.”
