Nuclear watchdog eyes standards for reactor shutdown in fear of giant volcanic eruption

The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) held a meeting of a panel of outside experts on Oct. 17 to start considering the formulation of standards for ordering a nuclear power plant to shut down in preparation for a giant volcanic eruption. Arguing that there is a high possibility of smaller volcanic eruptions occurring ahead of a giant eruption, the expert panel …

Pacific Ocean’s response to greenhouse gases could extend California drought for centuries

Clues from prehistoric droughts and arid periods in California show that today’s increasing greenhouse gas levels could lock the state into drought for centuries, according to a study led by UCLA professor Glen MacDonald. The study, published today in the Nature.com journal Scientific Reports, looked at how natural climatic forces contributed to centuries-long and even millennia-long periods of dryness in California …

87,000 NASA Images Show a Greening Arctic

Flowers carpet the tundra in Nunavut, the northernmost territory of Canada. Photo credit: DB Marsh/Library and Archives Canada via Flickr The researchers report in the Journal of Remote Sensing that examination of 87,000 images captured by the NASA Landsat satellite reveals that Alaska, Quebec and other regions became greener between 1984 and 2012. Landsat, a project also backed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), provides the …

Science Explains How Complaining Is Negatively Altering Your Brain

Listening to someone complain, even if it’s yourself, has never done anyone any good. Some people say that it may act as a catharsis, a way to let go of negative emotions and experiences, and maybe letting it all out once in a while does feel good, but taking a closer look at what complaining actually does to the brain …

Does sexual aggression alter the female brain?

Rutgers scientists have taken a step toward understanding how sexual aggression alters the female brain. In a recent study in Scientific Reports, lead author Tracey Shors, professor in the Department of Psychology and Center for Collaborative Neuroscience in the School of Arts and Sciences, discovered that prepubescent female rodents paired with sexually experienced males had elevated levels of stress hormones, could …

JUSTIN GILLIS – Seas Are Rising at Fastest Rate in Last 28 Centuries

The worsening of tidal flooding in American coastal communities is largely a consequence of greenhouse gases from human activity, and the problem will grow far worse in coming decades, scientists reported Monday. Those emissions, primarily from the burning of fossil fuels, are causing the ocean to rise at the fastest rate since at least the founding of ancient Rome, the …

Horses can read human emotions, University of Sussex research shows

For the first time horses have been shown to be able to distinguish between angry and happy human facial expressions. Psychologists studied how 28 horses reacted to seeing photographs of positive versus negative human facial expressions. When viewing angry faces, horses looked more with their left eye, a behaviour associated with perceiving negative stimuli. Their heart rate also increased more …

Dr. Fritjof Capra is a physicist and systems theorist, an educator and activist and author of many international bestselling works dealing with emerging scientific principles that can alter our inadequate and dsfunctional worldviews and the ethics of society. Many listeners may remember his book The Tao of Physics, one of the most important books of the 1970s to introduce the properties of physics and its synergy with spiritual insights and teachings in Eastern mysticism. For the past 40 years Dr Capra has been researching the shift of worldviews and paradigms and how this might lead to a new vision of reality that would bring forth a cultural transformation. He is currently the founding director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley California, a fellow at Schumacher College in the UK, and serves on the Council of the Earth Charter Initiative. He holds degrees in theoretical physics from the University of Vienna and has worked on high energy physics at the Universities of Paris, London, Stanford and at the Lawrence Livermore Labs at the Berkeley. His most recent book “The Systems View of Life: A Unifying Vision”is perhaps the most comprehensive textbook to understanding how the emerging discipline of systems theory can inform and recreate our perceptions and actions in just about everything in our lives.
