Michael Payne – The Specter of an American Police State Looms Over America

It’s coming, we don’t know when it will fully emerge, but it’s on the way. When this rampant societal violence, and especially these tragic mass shootings and slaughter of helpless, innocent Americans continues unabated, when this government refuses to address and attack the underlying causes, we will see the emergence of an American police state. Right now we’re witnessing what …

Andrew J. Bacevich – The Decay of American Politics

My earliest recollection of national politics dates back exactly 60 years to the moment, in the summer of 1956, when I watched the political conventions in the company of that wondrous new addition to our family, television.  My parents were supporting President Dwight D. Eisenhower for a second term and that was good enough for me.  Even as a youngster, …

Prof. Lawrence S. Wittner – The Trillion Dollar “Nuclear Weapons Question” the Media Have Neglected to Ask Presidential Candidates

Isn’t it rather odd that America’s largest single public expenditure scheduled for the coming decades has received no attention in the 2015-2016 presidential debates? The expenditure is for a thirty-year program to “modernize” the U.S. nuclear arsenal and production facilities. Although President Obama began his administration with a dramatic public commitment to build a nuclear weapons-free world, that commitment has long ago …

They might also remember the most famous ad in …

Michael Brenner – America’s Worst Laid Plans

The United States has been pursuing an audacious project to fashion a global system according to its specifications and under its tutelage since the Cold War’s end. For a quarter of a century, the paramount goal of all its foreign relations has been the fostering of a system whose architectural design features the following: –a neo-liberal economic order wherein markets …

Dani McClain – This “New” Feminism Has Been Here All Along

Joanne Smith’s understanding of feminism is shaped in large part by her grandmother’s story. The now-deceased matriarch, then employed as a nurse in Haiti, wrote to President John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s seeking a way out of the country for her family during the turbulent reign of Haitian President François “Papa Doc” Duvalier. Kennedy responded, awarding Smith’s engineer …

John Kozy -“The Stupidity of Belief”: The Inner Politics and Nature of Mankind Have Not Changed in 7,000 Years

Oh, How primitive we are still! Around 1600, when Europeans began to use the methods of learning that are now called scientific, Galilleo peered at the moon. In 1969, a man walked on the moon. In fewer than 400 years, people went from peering at the moon to walking on it.  Scientific knowledge works. Yet beliefs, claims that are not …
