Prof. Joanna Bourke is a historian, social feminist and scholar from New Zealand and currently a professor of history in the Department of History, Classics and Archeology at Birkbeck University of London in the UK. Raised in New Zealand, Zambia, and Haiti, she has focused her research on the culture and history of war and fear, the history of rape and gender struggle, and the sociology of violence. She is the director of the Birkbeck Trauma Project, which attempts to understand the deeper contexts of traumatic events and how they are constructed and manifest over time. Joanna holds degrees from Auckland University and a doctorate from Australian National University. Last year she was elected a Fellow of the British Academy, which recognizes the highest distinction of scholarship in the humanities. Joanna has authored ten book on war and violence, her latest is “Deep Violence: Military Violence, War Play and the Social Life of Weapons.”
